Pompton Lakes pollution is still there, but threat level has eased BY JAMES M. When scientists began raising alarms about a decade ago on the health risks of a newly discovered phenomenon they called vapor intrusion, it presented a frightening specter for people living above contaminated land: silent, invisible toxic vapors seeping into their homes with the power to cause illness and even cancer. Now, as the body of science builds, regulators in some instances are dialing back their concerns about health risks. That was the scenario recently when the state drastically reduced the number of homes in Pompton Lakes it considered at risk from a plume of contaminated groundwater.
