EPA to CTS on Superfund cleanup: You forgot the TCE by Tonya Maxwell, Asheville Citizen-Times September 1, 2015 ASHEVILLE – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has disapproved a proposed cleanup plan for the CTS of Asheville Superfund site, in part because it fails to address the source of the metal degreasing chemical trichloroethylene, better known as TCE, that has plagued the area. In a cleanup study CTS submitted to the EPA in July, the company’s contractor said it would use electric probes to clean up a one-acre underground plume of aged petroleum, likely fuel or diesel oil, beneath a concrete pad where the building once stood. But that proposal did not take on the source of TCE, a carcinogen associated with cancer of the kidneys and other organs.
