Sussex officials give Arbors developer more time
Apartment complex start held up by brownfield remediation

The developer of the long-awaited Arbors at Cottagedale apartment complex has been given a reprieve to get underway as the sunset date nears for work to get started.

Rezoning and conditional-use applications are set to expire on Jan. 1, 2016, but approvals and permits to start remediation of a brownfield site on the property have held up site-work necessary to get the project substantially underway to meet the deadline.

At its Aug. 27 meeting, Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission approved a six-month suspension to allow developer CB Lewes LLC more time to finish cleaning up the former dump site and start construction.

“They can't start construction until they mitigate the site because of potential impact on buildings if they were constructed,” said Lawrence Lank, the county's director of planning and zoning.
