'It's starting to look like a park': Sterling riverfront project turns a corner Sauk Valley Media (IL) October 2, 2015 STERLING – In September 2013, the city received the largest state green space grant ever awarded in Illinois. The $1.3 million Illinois Green Space Infrastructure Grant, and a $900,000 award from the state’s Mud to Parks program, jump-started an ecotourism project that is a key component in the city’s riverfront revitalization plans. Plans for the $2.18 million ecotourism project include a wetland and pond complex to improve water quality, 9 acres of natural landscape restoration, 3,000 square feet of publicly accessible green roofs, and more than 4,500 square feet of grass. The Mud to Parks money will pay for the transfer of tens of thousands of cubic yards of fill material to cover the Northwestern Steel & Wire brownfield site.
