EPA plan update for AVX site could cost $4M

OLEAN - Federal authorities have finalized changes to a 19-year-old cleanup plan for an industrial property in east Olean.

The new plan for the property calls for preventing the contamination from spreading, rather than outright removing of the affected soils.

To contain the apparent contamination, the EPA plans to build a 25-foot-deep trench near the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad tracks to intercept contaminated groundwater leaving the AVX site so it can be treated; install an exposure barrier at AVX to keep volatile vapors out of the plant; and increase pumping capacity for the pump-and-treat system currently at AVX designed to contain the plume of TCE leaving the site.
