Former golf course gets pollution designation Greening chemicals used on former golf greens prompt brownfield designation by Anne Geggis Sun Sentinel (FL) November 11, 2015 Pompano Beach - Chemicals used to green up a former golf course have left the property needing some green — of the paper kind — to clean it up. The City Commission voted unanimously Tuesday designate one of the former greens of Palm Aire Country Club a "brownfield," or tainted ground. Such a designation would qualify its developer for tax credits for what is spent to clean it up. The 26-acre site at the northwest corner of Northwest 31st Avenue and Atlantic Boulevard is approved for 404 residential townhome units. Construction on the project has already begun. "This site is unique in that the contamination investigation and response started in 2003," said Michael Goldstein, an attorney representing the developer. "But there wasn't enough money or willingess by the previous owners to invest in both the cleanup and redevelopment. So … this site which has tremendous economic and job creation potential, remained on the sidelines and marginalized." … For the entire article, see http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/pompano-beach/fl-pompano-brownfield-effort-20151111-story.html -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/brownfields-cpeo.org | |
