Settling in at the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation

Add a former industrial site in a dense urban setting.

Throw in a creative, enthusiastic group of people with a vision to transform an historic maritime setting into a beautiful landscape and you have the newly planted grounds of the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation.

This past September, volunteers planted native trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses in the approximately two-acre lot along the Christina River in Wilmington as part of a collaboration among several organizations.

Funded primarily by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, the project aims to transform a former brownfield (vacant, abandoned or underutilized properties which may be contaminated) into a demonstration and educational site.
