Engineering firm says Sudbury Raytheon site safe for apartments By Brittney McNamara Metrowest Daily News (MA) February 8. 2016 SUDBURY - According to consulting firm Sanborn, Head and Associates, contamination at the Raytheon site targeted for a housing development will not pose a health risk for future residents. Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) records show various contaminants at the Raytheon land that National Development and Avalon Bay have slated for affordable housing and retail use. In a Feb. 4 letter to the development agencies, Sanborn, Head and Associates said current known conditions at the site are safe for future residents. ... In the early 1990s, groundwater testing revealed trichloroethylene (TCE, classified as a human carcinogen by Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry) and more recently, testing found Freon 7. According to DEP records, Raytheon reached a temporary solution for the TCE contamination in 2008, which means the contamination was under control, but requires continued monitoring.
