State seeks comments on Elmira brownfield

New York state is looking for public comment on a proposed cleanup plan at a former industrial site in the City of Elmira.

Now vacant, the former Matt Brewer Oil Co. sits on 1.1 acres at 915 E. Market St. in Elmira. The site is the last property on the street, which dead-ends at a railroad bed.

Prior to 1950, the site was used for lumber and coal storage and distribution, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

In 1954, Matt Brewer Oil Co. purchased the site and used it for the bulk storage of lubricants, petroleum and solvents until the 1990s, DEC said.
