INDUSTRY - The Department of Toxic Substances Control will begin testing soil from 300 homes and 27 commercial properties in areas of Hacienda Heights surrounding Quemetco Inc., a lead-acid battery recycling facility in City of Industry, state environmental officials announced Thursday.

Officials will look for high levels of lead and arsenic, which may have spewed from the facility’s smokestacks and escaped as airborne dust from trucks and storage areas, said DTSC project manager Jose Diaz during an Industry City Council meeting.

Diaz said extensive health risk assessment studies may be ordered if early soil tests find more than federal action levels of 80 parts per million for lead and 12 parts per million for arsenic, a carcinogen linked to skin, bladder, liver and lung cancers.
