Emmaus residents were exposed to unsafe level of air carcinogen near Rodale Manufacturing site

EMMAUS - A carcinogenic air pollutant was measured in 2012 at a level nearly four times the acceptable limit in an Emmaus neighborhood near the former Rodale Manufacturing site, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Trichloroethylene, an industrial solvent linked to kidney cancer, was measured at a concentration of 8.0 micrograms per liter in one of five samples taken outside houses within a two-block radius of the industrial site at South Sixth and Minor streets.

Another sample had a concentration of 5.7 micrograms per liter.

"These TCE concentrations are above the health-based inhalation standard of 2.1 micrograms per liter and present an unacceptable health risk," EPA spokesman Roy Seneca said this week.
