Megaprojects: Developer hopes to reenergize former Potrero Hill power plant site San Francisco Business Times (CA) April 29, 2016 The Potrero power plant had been used for ship building and repair, foundries, sugar refining and barrel manufacturing for the past century before shutting down in 2011. It is now slated for a 21-acre mixed-use development. … With its location near San Francisco’s Pier 70 and India Basin developments, the scarred 21-acre site of the closed Potrero Power Plant is a hot development property. District Development is now talking to neighborhood groups as the next step in entitling the site for about 3 million square feet of mixed-use space. Residential development had been banned by former owner PG&E on the site when it traded hands, but PG&E removed the ban. The developer is also planning temporary uses to activate the site before starting construction. Environmental cleanup remains one of the site’s biggest issues, and the cleanup of the land’s oil contamination is in progress. The power plant was shut down in 2011.
