Investigation finds widespread contamination at former Haines Fuel Terminal By Emily Files KHNS Radio (Haines, AK) May 10 2016 Extensive testing at the former Haines Tank Farm and Fuel Terminal found widespread fuel-related contamination. Approximately 75,000 cubic yards of soil have contaminants that exceed environmental standards. The problem is decades old, from the time that the Haines-Fairbanks pipeline operated with little environmental oversight in the 1950s and ‘60s. This contamination investigation will hopefully lead to a final clean-up. But at a meeting last week, some residents said the process was not moving fast enough. Thursday’s restoration advisory board meeting took a different tone than the last. Almost immediately, members confronted a presenter about what they saw as too-slow progress. “This is poppycock,” said Jim Studley. “You are not taking advantage of the situation. The inability of the government to act is ridiculous.” … For the entire article, see http://khns.org/investigation-finds-widespread-contamination-at-former-haines-fuel-terminal -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/brownfields-cpeo.org | |
