South Ontario neighborhood has lived on trucked-in water for 9 years, here’s why

ONTARIO - A resolution for residents of 37 homes - who, for almost a decade, have had to truck in all their water because their private wells were contaminated — is close at hand.

State regulators approved a settlement this week among nine parties that will bring relief to those living along a nearly 3-mile long chemical plume. One mile wide, the impacted area is bound by Grove Avenue on the west, Turner Avenue on the east, Kimball Avenue on the south and the 60 Freeway to the north.

The culprit is a toxic industrial cleaning agent, trichloroethylene, commonly referred to as TCE, which was used at what’s now called Ontario International Airport, dating back to the 1940s, Joe Grindstaff, general manager of Inland Empire Utilities Agency, a regional wastewater treatment agency and wholesale water distributor, said. The agency is one of nine parties to the agreement and cleanup order.

TCE is not in Ontario’s municipal water system, officials said.
