Mirror Pond, old Evergreen School largely contamination-free By Scott Hammers Bend Bulletin October 10, 2016 Mirror Pond and the old Evergreen School in Redmond are substantially contamination-free, according to a report recently released by Deschutes County. The county inspected the sites as part of a larger “brownfields” assessment conducted over the past three years. A brownfield is a property that is or is suspected to be contaminated as a result of how it was used previously and is, therefore, a poor candidate for redevelopment. The federal Environmental Protection Agency awarded Deschutes County $264,000 to research past uses and in some cases to fund testing for contaminants at nine sites around the region. Apex Companies of Portland did the work under contract with the county. Samples of silt taken at Mirror Pond found sporadic concentrations of metals and hydrocarbons above the level considered safe, but the report concluded that sediment dredged from the pond probably could be reused on dry land. ...
