Royal Oak gives tax break to Beaumont to redevelop old shopping center
$3.7M tax break is for environmental cleanup

Beaumont Hospital is getting ready to begin demolition to redevelop the Northwood Shopping Center at 13 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak and Monday got a $3.7 million tax break from the city for environmental cleanup.

The $33 million redevelopment plan includes building a three-story hotel, space for five retailers and a major grocery store. The hospital still has to get final planning and zoning approval for the development.

Besides the 13-acre shopping center, two more acres are being added with the inclusion of the nearby Belle Court apartments on Coolidge and the Firestone Auto Care building on Woodward.

City Commissioner Jeremy Mahrle questioned why the city should forgo taxes when Beaumont is already liable for the cleanup costs because it has owned the property since the 1980s.
