Skeptics Question Cleanup Calendar – Ferdman, ‘This is a Joke’

There might be an end in sight to the Whittaker-Bermite soil cleanup, the operative word being might, because the current developments could mean either a final push to get the project done or just another delay.

The development comes from project coordinator Hassan Amini of Amec Foster Wheeler, the company directing and coordinating the cleanup on Whittaker Corp.’s behalf. Amini said the current plan is to compress the schedule by increasing the amount of space and, therefore, the amount of soil each treatment pad is working on. How that would be done has not been finalized, he said, so he has not submitted any plans to the city or the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, which oversees the cleanup. He hopes to get approval and start in a couple of months.

“I don’t think that DTSC will be much of a hurdle,” Amini said. “The goal is to see the site remediated as quick as possible. With the city, you’ve got to go through the process of permitting. I don’t expect they will be any problem.”
