Thrills are par for the course at new $60 million Porsche facility By Sandy Mazza Daily Breeze (Los Angeles County, CA) November 14, 2016 As the baking sun glints off its high-gloss black exterior, a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S careens into an ice patch, loses traction and pitches right while its inexperienced driver steers into the skid to align the $110,000 sports car. The driver’s timing is off and the 420-horsepower car spins around on the ice aimlessly. But it’s not in danger. This was just a test run around the new track at the Porsche Experience Center in Carson. The $60 million Carson complex opens to the public on Friday on the site of the former Dominguez Hills Golf Course adjacent to the 405 Freeway at 19800 S. Main St., across from the docking site of the West Coast’s Goodyear blimp. ... The Carson facility has been in the works since 2011. Construction took longer than expected because of a major environmental cleanup on the underground closed landfill at the site. The landfill had to be lined with a membrane to contain it. Then, piles had to be driven all the way through to the native soil below to set the building and track foundations. “The track remediation certainly took longer than we expected,” Oosthuizen said. “There are 200 piles for the building and 200 piles for the track that are 30 to 60 feet deep.” ...
