Authority seeking grant to clean up old dump

SHEFFIELD -- The majority of a $200,000 Environmental Protection Agency brownfields cleanup grant would be used to clean up soil contaminated by lead from a shooting range located near the city's old dump.

The Sheffield Redevelopment Authority is applying for the grant that would also be used to removed old refrigerators, tires and other items that were dumped in the area.

The authority held a hearing Monday to allow the public to inquire about the grant. Five people attended, not including authority members and two representatives of PM Environmental of Decatur, who conducted the assessment.
