City mulling expensive Brownfields work at Racine Steel Castings site by PATRICK LEARY Racine Journal Times June 3, 2017 RACINE - More than four years since the city’s Redevelopment Authority purchased the former Racine Steel Castings site, city staff are still planning out how to clean up the site’s toxic soil. The city’s possible next steps in that process were laid out at this week’s RDA meeting in a presentation from Donna Volk, a senior manager at Ramboll Environ, a Denmark-based consulting company with offices in Milwaukee. In the presentation, Volk estimated that to effectively treat both lots on the site, 1425 N. Memorial Drive, the city would need to come up with about $1.5 million to $2.5 million. The expense is so great because much of the soil contains high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are probable human carcinogens.
