Charles Town dedicates new park, announces restoration

CHARLES TOWN — It bustled for nearly 100 years starting the 1880s as an industrial site that converted goal into gas fuel. Afterward, it became a fallow field, contaminated with the chemical waste from all of that dirty manufacturing.

On Friday, Charles Town officials here celebrated the rebirth of the nearly six-acre site as a nature park and the last link of a four-mile walking greenway connecting east and west neighborhoods.

More than $900,000 in various government grants, city funds and city employee time were spent for more than seven years to clean up a 50,000-square-foot portion of site located stone’s throw off Washington Street, at the end of the intersection West Congress Street and South Mount Parvo Avenue.
