Pompton Lakes plan has risks

Forgive the people of Pompton Lakes for being skeptical about the questionable pilot plan being floated to keep cancer-causing contamination that migrated off a nearby DuPont site from vaporizing up into their basements. You see, there is a history – in this case a long and painful history – regarding environmental cleanup in Pompton Lakes.

Indeed, the issues involving the contaminated groundwater under about 450 homes date back decades, to the time when DuPont ran a munitions factory in the area during North Jersey’s heavy industrial heyday. That factory dumped PCE and TCE, cancer-causing solvents, which spread to the groundwater in the adjacent neighborhood, which has significantly elevated cancer rates.

This latest plan to attempt to mitigate the effects of this epic, toxic nightmare is a pilot study being proposed by Chemours, a spinoff successor to DuPont. As The Record reported, the pilot test would pump water through a horizontal well into the contaminated groundwater beneath the affected homes to dilute the contamination, but not remove it.
