Waunakee library project costs come into focus

Several sources of revenue, including $1.2 million pledged by area foundations, businesses and families, will offset the new Waunakee Public Library’s $15 million price tag.

At their meeting Monday, Waunakee Village Board members got an update on the library project from Geoff Vine, who is acting as the owner’s representative on the project. Vine has extensive experience in large building projects as the former president of Stevens Construction, and has volunteered his time to see the project through.

Recently, when building demolition began at the N. Madison Street site, village officials learned that the costs would be higher than anticipated due to low levels of PCBs found in the concrete and unusually large concrete footings for the building.

The village is in the process of applying for an additional brownfield grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, which has already provided a $500,000 grant.
Since then, a petroleum product has also been found in the soil, said Public Works Director Kevin Even. That resulted in a $50,000 cost increase. The concrete was expected to be hauled out last week, with the restoration complete in the next week or two.
