No contamination found at city's brownfield sites

MARTINSVILLE – No major ground contamination so far has been discovered at five sites that city officials are targeting for redevelopment, Martinsville City Council learned Tuesday night.

“We’re very fortunate” for that, said Councilwoman Kathy Lawson.

But the process of evaluating the properties is far from over.

In 2016, the city obtained $400,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assess “brownfields” – abandoned or underused industrial and commercial sites such as factories, warehouses, gas stations and other places that may have once used chemicals hazardous to the environment.
