Somerville developer sues dry cleaner for groundwater contamination

SOMERVILLE - The builder of the Somerville Town Center redevelopment project on West Main Street is suing the owners of a defunct dry cleaners across the street, claiming the business has contaminated the groundwater on the property.

Somerville Town Center Urban Renewal, formerly known as JSM at Somerville, filed suit in federal court against Hyo Joon Kim and Yong Sim KIm, Westfield residents who owned Pessaroff Cleaners from about 1985 until 2013 or 2014.

The suit alleges that the groundwater on the vacant property between Davenport Street and Doughty Avenue was contaminated by chemicals that originated at the cleaners. A dry cleaning business had been operated on the site since the early 1900s.
