Unitil expands renewable energy offerings in Fitchburg

FITCHBURG - Nearly 3,710 solar panels that power the equivalent of 144 homes and fill 13 football fields, weighing as much as 12 elephants, came online recently, expanding Unitil’s renewable energy portfolio to help the natural gas and electric provider meet mandated requirements.

Unitil is celebrating the first summer season of operation of its 1.3 MW solar array at 115 Sawyer Passway. The property, vacant for 20 years, had been used to generate energy for the city dating to before the Civil War, most notably as a fossil fuel plant for much of the 20th century. Today, the site has returned to its historical use for Fitchburg, generating clean, renewable energy in support of the Green Communities Act.

“This is a terrific example of how you can repurpose a brownfield (site) and we hope it will serve as an example of redevelopment for other gas plants and brownfield sites,” said Steve Remen, executive vice president of EDF Renewables, a contractor that assisted with the construction.
