Parent-Child Center gets brownfields grant By GORDON DRITSCHILO Rutland Herald (VT) July 23, 2018 The state is helping a local nonprofit clean up a decades-old mess. The Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development announced Monday that it had awarded $131,206 from the state’s brownfields program to clean up the Chaplin Avenue property in the city that will serve as the new home of the Rutland County Parent-Child Center, bringing the organization’s services under one roof. “We have gas in the soil, some polychlorine biphenyl, which is often waste from industrial processes,” said Tyler Richardson, REDC’s executive director. Richardson said the contamination at 16 Chaplin Ave. is believed to have originated from an auto repair shop that existed on the site in the 1920s and ’30s. The building started as a residential dwelling in the early 1900s. “There was furniture storage, construction supplies, a baked-goods warehouse and then a paper-hanging school,” he said. “All that stuff isn’t going to put in too much contamination, so the assumption is it’s from the auto repair shop.” … For the entire article, see https://www.rutlandherald.com/articles/parent-child-center-gets-brownfields-grant/ -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center P.O.
