Can Camden turn a toxic dumping ground into a playground?

CAMDEN – Isaac Wansley kept a watchful eye on his grandchildren Wednesday morning: 4-year-old Shereef Coley, who'd absconded with Wansley's black cane and was riding it around like a stick horse, and Serene Anderson, who followed her little brother, taking pictures with her grandfather's cellphone.

By this time next year, the children will come to this Whitman Park site, a block from Brimm Medical Arts and Camden Prep schools and the PATCO Hi-Speedline, and no longer see the crumbling, graffiti-marked remains of Camden Labs buildings.

Instead, Wansley, who lives in a senior housing complex nearby, can bring his grandchildren to a brand-new recreational space, an extension of Whitman Park and its basketball courts, football and baseball fields, and playgrounds.
