Whirlpool TCE plume migrates west to industrial area

A cancer-causing chemical used in the 1980s at Whirlpool in Fort Smith has migrated to groundwater in an industrial area west of the facility, according to the company’s 2018 semi-annual report on the issue.

Further testing for trichloroethene (TCE) vapor inside the former Whirlpool building is expected in November. The chemical has been abated up to 98 percent in some areas, and 80 to 85 percent in others. Legal settlements have been made with all the residential property owners in the well ban area.

The former Whirlpool facility sits on about 150 acres with over 1.7 million square feet that has been sold in two parcels, now used as a mixed-use development for manufacturing and warehouse storage.
