Firm to assess former china plant contaminants

A movement is under way to study what contaminants exist at the Brownfield site of the former Shenango China plant off Sampson and Grant streets.

The Lawrence County commissioners have approved a professional services contract with RAR Engineering Group LLC to complete environmental assessments of Brownfield sites within the city of New Castle as part of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant. The engineering firm will be paid a maximum of $180,000 for its work, under the agreement.

She said there are two grassy knolls behind the building where lead contamination from the china industry was buried. The state Department of Environmental Protection determined that the hillsides should be encapsulated and kept them covered with grass, but there is a question about whether they are in compliance, she said.
