Ogdensburg to conduct more contamination testing at old Shade Roller site

OGDENSBURG - The state Department of Environmental Conservation is requiring the city to drill new test wells at the former Standard Shade Roller industrial site at 541 Covington St. to determine if there are additional contaminants at the site.

The tests will seek to determine if groundwater at the brownfield site is contaminated by two different compounds, one known as “1,4 dioxane” and the other known as “per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances.”

Both compounds are used in some manufacturing processes, and are considered to potentially be harmful to people.
The mandatory testing at the former Ogdensburg industrial site is part of a statewide initiative being carried out by the DEC to re-evaluate known remediation sites. The old Shade Roller manufacturing property is one such site, according to Ogdensburg city officials.
