How Arizona is cleaning up dozens of contaminated groundwater sites By Courtney Holmes, Cortland Jeffrey ABC 15 TV News (AZ) May 15, 2019 PHOENIX - Slow moving plumes of potentially toxic water are sitting underneath homes, businesses and schools throughout Arizona. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is responsible for investigating and oversees the cleanup of the contaminated soil and groundwater through the Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF) program. While some cities like Phoenix do not use groundwater for drinking water, much of the state does. "About 44% of Arizona's drinking water comes from groundwater," says Laura Malone, ADEQ Waste Programs Director. Her department oversees the cleanup of 36 contaminated sites on the WQARF registry.
