Consultant delayed revealing TCE test results to state agency before apartment evacuation
Emails show the firm waited one week before it shared test results with the Department of Natural Resources and also confirmed residents were living in the complex despite the agency's recommendation to delay occupancy.

MILWAUKEE — A consulting firm representing developers of a Milwaukee residential apartment building waited at least one week to share the results of testing for the presence of a toxic chemical with the Department of Natural Resources despite repeated requests from the state agency for the information, according to emails detailing the correspondence.

The results of the testing were significant enough for the Department of Natural Resources to contact the Milwaukee Health Department, which issued an emergency order evacuating the Community Within the Corridor East Block building of more than 150 residents because of elevated levels of trichloroethylene, or TCE, a toxic cancer-causing chemical.

Just before noon on March 20, Department of Natural Resources Hydrogeologist Jane Pfeiffer emailed Robert Reineke, a top official for K. Singh & Associates, an environmental and geotechnical consulting firm, to ask if Reineke had an update on testing for TCE at the apartment building.
