Community within the Corridor's West Block residents also moved in before tests were complete

Developers of a Milwaukee affordable housing complex whose second half has been evacuated over environmental concerns also moved residents into the first part of Community within the Corridor before completing state-recommended testing. 

While levels of Trichloroethylene, or TCE, in the Community within the Corridor’s first phase — known as the West Block — did not reach the dangerously high levels that required an emergency evacuation order for the development’s East Block in March, the Department of Natural Resources ordered developers to inform residents of the West Block of an issue in their building in December, according to publicly available DNR records.

Community within the Corridor, built on a former industrial site at North 31st and West Center Streets, was supposed to be the largest affordable housing development in Wisconsin’s history.
