Gene Grant: First base It's time we started making plans for life without Kirtland By Gene Grant, Columnist Albuquerque Tribune (NM) April 21, 2005 The city is bracing yet again for another spring rite - a Base Realignment and Closure cycle for the military bases around the country that the federal government deems redundant or unnecessary. Locally, that arrow could point to Kirtland Air Force Base. The list of bases facing possible BRAC actions will be released May 16. In case you've only recently moved here, do yourself a favor and go to the Trib's Web site - www.abqtrib.com - where there is terrific reporting that will get you caught up with the back story, so you can understand the drama in context. As is the usual case, the local power-brokers' wagons have circled yet again in another well-rehearsed choreography. These brokers are good, smart people with a strong sense of civic pride, who will go to the nation's capital and represent us well in this effort, as they've done since 1995. All that said, here is my question: Is it so crushing a thought that Kirtland might close? ...
