Commissioners will visit bases before drawing final closure list

WASHINGTON -- The commission charged with determining which military
bases should be closed this year will try to send its members to all
facilities being reviewed before they are placed on the final closure
list, officials said Thursday.  

The plan calls for assigning commission members to regions of the
country and asking them to visit all facilities in their regions that
are being looked at for possible closure.  Sen. 

Christopher J. Dodd, D-Conn., met with Base Realignment and Closure
Commission Chairman Anthony Principi Thursday, and was told about the
plan to divide up the panel's work.  

Charles Battaglia, executive director of the base closure commission,
said the regional concept is an attempt to meet the stringent time
requirements for finalizing the list of recommended base changes.  "We
will ask commissioners to work in their areas of the country to the best
they can, to accomplish this mission expeditiously," said Battaglia,
adding that they also plan to split the nine-member commission into
three groups to conduct regional hearings across the country.
