Pease chasing Airbus deal that could soften BRAC cutsBy ROBERT M. COOK Foster's Daily Democrat (NH) May 1, 2005 If the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is closed, there may be similar jobs waiting for the laid-off workers just down the road at Pease International Tradeport. The Kittery, Maine, shipyard's future hinges on whether it is on the latest Base Realignment and Closure list, to be made public no later than May 16. That’s about the same time the final candidates for a new aircraft plant are to be announced, and Pease hopes to be included on the short list. European Aeronautics Defense Systems North America is shopping around the country for a site for an assembly plant for KC-330 military tankers. What economists and Pease officials find so intriguing about the proposal is that EADS, an arm of the company that builds Airbus commercial jets, could use many of the same specialized skills as does the shipyard. Russ Thibeault, president of Applied Economic Research in Laconia, said it could be serendipitous if the EADS contract was landed at the same time the shipyard closed. ...
