Jitters in Kittery: Base closure plans spook politicians By NATE PARDUE Foster's Daily Democrat (NH) May 1, 2005 KITTERY, Maine - Even as the Department of Defense urges communities threatened by possible base closure to take hundreds of thousands of dollars to plan for that possibility, many elected officials insist it is too soon to start readying for the worst. Communities like Kittery and state agencies like the Workforce Opportunity Council have already begun to form contingency plans for employees of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard should it close. At least some of those plans have come together using a $175,000 federal grant rewarded to communities that might lose their bases. Meanwhile, members of the congressional delegations from both New Hampshire and Maine are not publicly addressing any closure scenarios, saying their attention has been geared instead toward keeping the yard open. ...
