Invitation or invasion? By BILL SANDIFER Washington Daily News (NC) May 1, 2005 North Carolina has rolled out the red carpet to military overtures on all but a few occasions, earning a reputation as one of the most military-friendly states in the country. And with only a handful of exceptions, soldiers and civilians have made good neighbors. The state's lieutenant governor, Beverly Purdue, has placed herself in the role of cheerleader in the run-up to a mid-May base realignment and closure announcement. Purdue has made it clear she wants not only to keep North Carolina's military holdings intact but expand them as well. And with the anticipated closing of several overseas bases and a grassroots Virginia effort to ship eight squadrons of Super Hornets elsewhere, Purdue may see her dreams come true. But at least one Eastern North Carolinian feels that red carpet may have become a red flag, attracting a military that has become bullish. Keith Hackney, attorney and Beaufort County Airspace chairman, has years of experience in tracking military expansion in Eastern North Carolina and fears the region could become a military dumping ground. ...
