PASCAGOULA - Singing River synergy stays no matter what BRAC says

Naval Station Pascagoula has been dwindling for two years. Like the rest of the Navy, it's downsizing.

Two cruisers are gone and won't be replaced and a third is scheduled to be decommissioned in late fall or next year.

So whether the small base, situated on two-thirds of a dredge-spoils island south of the city, makes the Base Realignment and Closure Commission hit list this week may not be as important as it once was to the community.

"Some people are thinking, 'They might close the base. The sky is falling,' " said George Freeland, director of the Jackson County Economic Development Foundation. "But the truth is that economic impact happens every time a cruiser is decommissioned.
