millions, but its military value is what's crucialBY JOHN MASSON DETROIT FREE PRESS May 7, 2005 With its ongoing upgrades, its location on an international border, and its unusual status as a facility that serves all five branches of the military, it's no wonder some experts think Selfridge Air National Guard Base will survive the current round of Pentagon base closures. ... Even if Selfridge does fall to the BRAC ax, the local economy might not be as badly damaged in the long run as some fear. Almost no one wants to talk about it, but one doesn't have to be a resort developer to see the potential in roughly 3,000 acres with frontage on Lake St. Clair's Anchor Bay -- a parcel that includes a marina, an 18-hole golf course, housing, lots of existing infrastructure and easy freeway access. "It's important real estate, yes," acknowledged Scott MacFarlane, Miller's press secretary. "But nothing has the value of Selfridge.
