[The former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant was closed outside the BRAC process. It is actually listed twice on the "Superfund" National Priorities List. - LS] Prairie beginning to take shape at Midewin By CHRIS YOUNG Springfield State Journal-Register (IL) May 21, 2005 Almost as soon as work began to convert the former site of the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant in northern Illinois to the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, grassland birds accepted the invitation to move back. "I've actually been impressed here at Midewin," says Chris Whelan, a grassland avian ecologist with the Illinois Natural History Survey. "As we have made changes to the habitat, there has been almost instantaneous response." And that's in spite of the fact that work to restore the 15,000-acre site is progressing slowly, but deliberately. The Midewin Web site says the Army is still cleaning up contamination left from decades of TNT manufacturing and packaging. A portion of the site is open to the public. (See www.fs.fed.us/mntp.) ...
