DEP to start investigation of pollution at sub baseBy RAY HACKETT Norwich Bulletin May 25, 2005 NORWICH-- A team from the state Department of Environmental Protection will begin investigating the environmental conditions at the Groton Submarine Base this week. Gov. M. Jodi Rell said Tuesday the U.S. Navy has agreed to her request to allow state inspectors to conduct a thorough review of the base to determine the level of contamination and an accurate estimate of the cleanup cost. "I have asked DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy to form a special team to go over every square inch of the base and make a thorough record of all the contamination, waste storage locations and other such sites," Rell said in announcing the agreement. Twenty-nine individual locations on the base require environmental cleanup, including 15 that were identified by the federal Environmental Protection Agency as Superfund sites. ...
