State to seek federal aid for base closure areas

WASHINGTON -- New York will seek federal aid to help Niagara Falls and
Rome recover from planned military base cuts, moving to meet a deadline
that comes months before the bases find out if they will truly be
closed. 

The state will seek assistance through the Department of Labor, which is
offering up to $1 million to each community slotted to lose civilian
jobs under the Base Realignment and Closure process known as BRAC. 

The Pentagon announced May 13 it aims to close Niagara Falls Air Reserve
Station, and cut 427 jobs from Rome labs and a nearby defense accounting
facility through BRAC, a nationwide shake up of military installations.
