Blumenthal: Navy Clueless On Cleanup Cost By ROBERT A. HAMILTON New London Day (CT) June 24, 2005 Groton - State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has criticized the Navy for conducting only limited surveys of radioactive contamination at the Naval Submarine Base, and for extrapolating what a cleanup might cost based on the experience at naval shipyards. Blumenthal has asked U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, D-Conn., to request additional documents from the Navy regarding the issue of radioactive contamination at the base, including any reports or records detailing what areas have been surveyed and how they were chosen. The Navy has said repeatedly that radioactive contamination at the base is minimal, adding less than 1 percent of natural background radiation, because of strict controls that have been in place for many years, and that if the base is closed as the Pentagon has recommended, re-use of the property would not be hindered by radiation levels. ...
