Don't Let Pentagon Dump On Us By PHILIP L. SUSSLER New London Day (CT) July 3, 2005 Connecticut can't let the Pentagon duck the cleanup costs it is responsible for at the sub base. So far, in justifying closure of the base, the Pentagon has decided to ignore almost all the associated environmental cleanup costs. The Defense Department's BRAC recommendation assumes that the environmental cleanup obligation and cost is about the same whether the base remains open or is closed abruptly and, therefore, the costs are treated as a wash. But what is the standard for cleanup? The standard for cleanup for continued use as a military base is much lower and less costly than it is for reuse of the base property for commercial or residential purposes. ...
