B-1 move could cost more than Pentagon claims it will save Jack Siebold KOTA-TV (Rapid City, SD) July 1, 2005 When the Pentagon announced it wanted to close Ellsworth, the rationale included saving $161 million a year. But that plan said nothing about the Belle Fourche Electronic Scoring Site; a backyard training range in what is called the Powder River Military Operating Area, or MOA. It is a 1.5-million-acre B-1 bomber playground over Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota. "These ranges have been set up and hosted by the local bases. Our whole purpose is to give them a short air time to get to us, saves money," Belle Fourche range manager Albert King said. ...
