[Reportedly the BRAC Commission is considering closing some bases not on 
the Pentagon's proposed list. Most, such as Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard 
(HI), would likely replace other installations currently on the list 
(Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, ME), but others, such as Brunswick Naval Air 
Station (ME) might close independently of any other major adjustments in 
the list. The Commission's voting procedures mean that the members would 
have to reach virtual consensus before recommending any closures not 
proposed by the Defense Department. - LS]

WASHINGTON - The commission reviewing the Pentagon's recommendations of 
bases it wants to close or restructure is considering adding more than a 
dozen more facilities to the list.

The facilities that could be targeted are in Alaska, California, Hawaii, 
Maine, North Carolina, North Dakota and Washington, D.C.

The release Friday of the new list - formally, a request to Defense 
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for additional information - is required 
before commissioners can visit the installations on fact-finding 
missions. Commissioners will vote July 19 on whether to add the bases to 
the list, which eventually goes to Congress and President Bush for final 
approval.
