BRAC panel spares MCRD, eyes Navy Broadway complex for closureBy Otto Kreisher COPLEY NEWS SERVICE/San Diego Union-Tribune July 19, 2005 The base-closures commission voted against putting the Marine Corps Recruit Depot on the closure list even though several commissioners had wanted to consider merging it with the service's other recruiting facility in Parris Island, S.C. WASHINGTON – The independent base realignment and closure commission Tuesday added the Navy's Broadway headquarters complex in downtown San Diego to the list of facilities being considered for closure, but voted down a proposal to put the Marine Corps Recruit Depot on the list. The commissioners voted 8-to-1 to include the Broadway complex for consideration with the understanding that the Navy was negotiating with developers to trade the valuable harbor-front site for construction of hundreds of military housing units in the county. The relocation of the Navy and civilian workers from the three buildings at the complex to one of the Navy bases in San Diego also would improve security, commissioners said. ...
