Subject: | [CPEO-IRF] Cost to clean |
I recently read through the main text of the Government Accountability's Office report on BRAC 2005 (GAO-05-785). Most of it is about the validity of the Pentagon's process for recommending closures and realignment, but on page 46 it summarizes the environmental restoration costs of proposed major base closures, noting that other costs are likely to emerge. Army $723.3 million Navy $154.6 million Air Force $71.3 million Total $949.1 million These figures severely understate the data contained in the Pentagon's own environmental annual report. According to my tabulation, completed in May soon after disclosure of the BRAC list, the cost to complete cleanup at BRAC major bases was $1,743,236,000. Furthermore, the cost to complete at just one Air Force facility, the Otis Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts, was shown as $540,912,000 LS -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Installation_Reuse_Forum mailing list Installation_Reuse_Forum@list.cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org/mailman/listinfo/installation_reuse_forum | |
